Apprentice of the Month - Cole Gibson
There’s something special about apprentices who are able to enjoy even the most demanding or difficult tasks, who do not complain but also take every opportunity to learn more about their trade during those times. An excellent example of this is Cole Gibson, a third-year apprentice who has been nominated August’s apprentice of the month.
“This is going to be my life for the next potentially forty years until I retire,” says Cole. “This whole thing isn’t just a skill, but I also see it as an extension of myself because I’m going to be dedicating so much of my life to this.”
Cole’s attitude makes him the perfect candidate for this award, working for our local contractors and having an excellent record not just in terms of his curiosity and drive to improve but also his ability to have a spotless attendance record.
“In the nine months he’s been with our shop he has never called out a single time,” says Jacob Smith, a foreman for Studebaker Electric. “He carries the same optimistic motivation with him every day, even when it’s going to be a rough one.”
In addition to being noticed in the field, Cole is known for his positivity and curious nature in the classroom.
“Cole is always asking the next question and wants to understand all topics on a deeper level,” says Zac Goodman, Cole’s second year instructor. “He is an active learner and an active participant. He always shows that leadership through action and is a natural leader.”
As to words of wisdom for up-and-coming apprentices, Cole has advice not many might consider given the hustle and bustle of our trade: take a moment to take a moment.
“If you take on too much and begin to overload yourself, you’re going to stress and break down. It never ends well,” says Cole, known for his positivity and calm. “Take a step back, breathe, and know that at the end of it, you’ve got this. There’s more to life than the problems we have on the job, so just take everything a step at a time.”
For his hard work, Cole will receive a tool bag and hand tool from Milwaukee Tools and congratulations from the JATC and its staff.
